Cleaning and organizing under the kitchen sink is an important task that can make your kitchen more useful and attractive. To be honest this area can quickly become cluttered with cleaning supplies, tools, and unnecessary items. I never used the space under my kitchen sink in our first rented home since it was dark, untilled, and I had no desire to do so. The story changed when we moved to a new house! When I was viewing the house, I went straight to the kitchen, and of course, the first place I looked was "under the kitchen sink". I thoroughly enjoyed cleaning and transforming the space into a paradise. Though it may be a bit dark and dreary, and sometimes we think it is best to leave that place alone, like I did. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you tackle this space beautifully.
Step 1: Clear the Area
Before you start cleaning, remove everything from under the sink. This includes sponges, trash bags, and any other items that may have found their way into this space. Some of the things may not be needed and should be disposed of or if anything needs to be relocated. Now that the area is empty, let's take the opportunity to clean the cabinet itself.
Step 2: Clean the Space
Dust and Wipe: Use a damp cloth to wipe down the surfaces, removing dust and grime. Don’t forget to get into the corners where dirt can hide.
Deodorize: If there are any unpleasant odors, sprinkle some baking soda on the bottom of the cabinet, let it sit for a while, and then clean it up. For stains or tough spots, a mixture of vinegar and water can be good. I love to use power zone detergent a lot.
Step 3: Assess and Gather
As we clean, lets look through our items.
Gathered all common cleaning products used in the kitchen in a basket. There is our window cleaner, cleanser, dish soap, dish rags, sponges and an old toothbrush we use for cleaning any nooks and crannies.
Step 4: Arrange Thoughtfully
And finally, When placing items back under the sink, think about arranging neatly.
Keep the items you use most often at the front in case you need them.
Heavier items should be place on the bottom shelf or the far back to prevent items from falling over.
Safety Considerations: Anytime i am cleaning, I always have my cats coming around to sniff the floor. lol. Cats are inquisitive. If you have children or pets, ensure that cleaning supplies are stored securely in bins or plastic bags.
Now, I believe "Under our Kitchen Sink" is tidy and smells fresh and now that you have organized the space, it’s important to maintain this order. (It is not easy though) but make it a practice to check under the sink from time to time.
